Fear and anxiety are common before group therapy. That fear shouldn’t stop you from pursuing treatment though. Group counseling is incredibly beneficial for people in addiction recovery, depression treatment, anxiety treatment and more. It is something we utilize in our intensive outpatient programs. In this guide, we will help you overcome your worries so you can take full advantage of group therapy.
The Benefits of Group Therapy
You may be wondering, why is group therapy necessary? Why can’t I just go through individual counseling? Working with a group helps you see that you are not alone. You can learn from other people’s experiences and share yours when you feel comfortable. There is an adjustment period in group therapy, but you will overcome it faster than you think. Most importantly, you will start to feel the value of the strong support system you are developing.
Note that there is nothing wrong with individual counseling. In fact, we recommend it for many of the patients in our IOP mental health programs. Individual counseling can supplement the lessons taught in group therapy, and it allows you to work one-on-one with a therapist. When you contact MHR Memphis, we will help you find the right therapy setup for your needs and goals.
What to Expect from Your First Group Therapy Sessions
If you know what to expect, you are less likely to fear group therapy. You may be asked to briefly introduce yourself in the first session, but you do not have to speak out about your experience. If you are not outspoken, we encourage you to listen closely to the experiences that others share. As you listen, find elements that you identify with or lesson you can learn from. You will be surprised by how much you have in common with others.
If you do feel comfortable speaking out right away, go for it! The more you participate, the more you with get out of group therapy.
The Fear Fades, But the Lessons Last Forever
Most people experience some fear before group therapy, but that fear fades quickly. As you become comfortable with the people around you, you will naturally open up more. The lessons taught in therapy will give you the tools to improve your quality of life, both now and in the future. Bring closure to the past, find strength in the present, and prepare for years of happiness and success. Our team will be here to guide you every step of the way.
