What is Evidence Based Treatment?

Not all mental health treatments are equally effective; some therapies may work better for some people, with some disorders, than others.

Mental health professionals use different treatment strategies to help people who experiencing mental health problems. Some treatments have research support in the scientific literature and other treatments have less or even no research base supporting them. Therapists who use treatment approaches based on the scientific literature rely on evidence based practice. When the term evidence based practice is used, it typically means that the specific treatment has been closely studied, has shown to be an effective treatment, in repeated studies and typically involves the use of treatment manuals. Treatment effectiveness, on the other hand, refers to how effectively treatment works in the real world. Treatments with scientific evidence supporting them are referred to as evidence based treatments. Some examples of widely used evidence based treatments are: cognitive therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, problem solving therapy, rational emotive therapy, prolonged exposure and motivational enhancement therapy.

To determine the effectiveness of a particular treatment, patient outcomes are measured. The most frequent patient outcomes include the measurement of symptoms, substance use, functional impairments and client satisfaction. While mental health professionals may use evidence based practices or evidence based treatments, you can see why few practitioners or programs have taken the additional steps of measuring and researching their outcomes in a real world treatment setting and published their treatment effectiveness. Because of this, there are actually only a limited number of treatment programs that have proven their treatment effectiveness using evidence based practices in real world settings.

Our treatment manuals are based on evidence based practices and have been shown repeatedly to be effective in reducing depressive symptoms, days of substance use, improved daily functioning and very high client satisfaction in numerous, peer reviewed, scientific publications in prestigious journals. In fact, a recent international systematic review of the dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment programs was conducted to synthesize existing evidence about treatment satisfaction among complicated clients with substance abuse and mental health disorders. Mental Health Resources ranked highest in overall treatment satisfaction of dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment programs in the world.
